In 1879 King Leopold II, after acquiring the Belgian Congo as his own private kingdom, hired Sir Henry Morton Stanley to investigate and chart his new domain.  His job was also to construct rudimentary public works such as roads and a railway and establish trading and communication stations.  Stanley's Expedition ran from 1880-1886.
